The Boarder Battle

Nice place to ride. . . . .kind of a tough place to race.

First of all, I have to appreciate the fact that I was able to enjoy this race instead of having to pull over 52 times throughout the race. That, I am grateful for. However, being dead last at the back of the start chute in a women's sport race is not a good place to be. . . . . .especially when you're a fast starter.

Don yelled go and I found myself in a very bad position. We funneled onto the start hill and suddenly there were women weaving everywhere in front of me. Tried as I might there was no way to get around them. . . . .I took the cheap seats giving it my all. I guess it just wasn't meant to happen. A couple women weaved together in front of me, and off I was. If you were at that race, you know that start hill was LONG. I, unfortunately, had to run a good portion of that start hill, just to try and get a better position. I popped out on top seeing how VERY far back I already was and I knew I had NO time to rest.

I jockied for a few more positions but wasn't able to clear another pack of girls in front of me as we ducked into the first set of single track. Big mistake. We rode the first set of single track slower on that first lap than I rode it in pre-ride. I now understand in even GREATER detail how frustrated those comp boys were at ME when I was racing elite. I know it was that gal's race too, but she slowed us down big time through that section with no place to get around. Combine that with my less than optimal start and I guess I should be happy I finished mid-pack.

On the brighter side, I didn't fall, I didn't make any seriously stupid mistakes, I rode everything. . . . . . . I just wasn't fast enough to make it a great finish.

Time to let it go and focus on the next race. And hope for a better start. . . . . . .or at least a way around to MAKE it a better start.

Finally an update

First of all, I'm SO tired of hearing about STUPID drivers hitting innocent cyclists. It really pisses me off. And what's with all these DRUNK people out driving? It seems like most of the hit and runs we've heard about on the news lately have been DRUNK drivers. REPEAT offenders, mind you. Those people who were just hit in Illinois were apparently picked off by a woman who is a 4? time drunk driver offender. . . . . .she doesn't even have a license. Give me a break. I don't mean to be judgemental, but can you say that's just WRONG???

On a happier note, I'm almost ALL the way over the cold I seemed to develop the Monday after Sunburst. Woke up that day with a sore throat which just got worse and had me feeling like crap Tuesday. Most of last week was spend recovering and not training, but such is life. Now I'm feeling pretty strong, but still expelling a lot of mucus and getting tired a little faster than usual.

This past weekend we took time for some "fun" camping outside of racing. We headed up to WI Rapids to visit Bill's brother at their "camper".

They had mopeds and we took them out for a little joy ride.

Then we moved on to the 4-wheeler. Yeah, that was my first experience riding/driving a 4-wheeler. I now want one.

Now we just need to get that piece of land up north. . . . . . . .

On the way home from Rapids we hit Mt Morris for a ride. Yeah, I still hate that course. Other than the fact they're adding a ski run and there are a few areas you have to walk across this dug up dirt, the trail was very well maintained. Still harder then all get out. . . . .I thought I was going to DIE. . . . . .but a little fun anyway.

Now it's time to focus on the Boarder Battle. We'll have a full truck heading up there. Some return peeps, some new peeps. . . . .a possibility that someone might come out of retirement for this race. . . . . .a good time is guaranteed to be had by all. At least in OUR little hotel on wheels.

Sunburst

Ok, finally I get around to writing up my race report. We all know it was great fun, but I'll see if I can recap it like a real competitor for you.

Being my first sport race I had definite pre-race jitters out on warm up. I know there are so many fast sport girls I was concerned as to how I would fit in. I haven't been watching the Sport races in terms of knowing who's who and who finishes where, I just knew a few of my "peeps" and how their finishes have been. Looking around at the start line didn't help. . . . .I had no idea who I should be looking to be behind.

Don yelled GOOOOOO and I realized I was WAY in the back. Yeah, there were only like 15 of us (and that's because no one likes this race), but being in the back of 15 women when you KNOW you should be towards the front isn't a good thing. I dodged a few and put the hammer down to get towards the front. In my experience where I start in a sport race is typically where I finish (or close to it) and I wasn't prepared to finish in the back.

Lap one I managed to settle in about 4th or 5th on the way up the bunny hill. I hopped on Ann's wheel when I heard her shift and drop her chain. The girls parted as she hopped off and put her chain back on. I wasn't looking forward to the climb in the woods. . . . . .I hyperventilate every single time I do that stupid climb. And I knew today would be even harder. Sure enough, we hit the steepest pitch going into the woods, and I started to hyperventilate. I continued that all the way through the single track climb until we popped out up top and I got a little break of downhill. I'm sure the gals around me thought I was going to pass out.. . . .even I thought I was going to pass out. But I popped out up top in decent shape. I think I was in 3rd or 4th.

It's all a blur now, but Regina and I traded places a number of times throughout the race. She'd pull away on the climbs, I'd catch her on the descents and the flatter stuff near the road on the north side of the hill. I knew if I could get in front of her in those areas, I could pull a tiny gap. But then we'd eventually pop back out on the bunny hill and she'd put the hurt on me big time. I'd pull to the side and watch her grind her way past me thinking "wow, she's strong". I could hear her breathing hard as well, so I knew we were pushing each other to our max. And for some strange reason. . . . . .it was fun. :-)

On our last lap up the bunny hill she over took me. I paced myself as I knew that 3rd time was going to REALLY hurt, but I also reminded myself it was my LAST time up that bitch, there was NO way I was going to walk. Regina, on the other hand, HAD to walk due to her gearing, but she stayed right on my tail up the climb. When she hopped back on she hadn't missed a beat and was right on my wheel. Again, she pulled ahead and we closed in on some more sport boys. I was gassed and couldn't muster up enough energy to put the hammer down to get in front of both of them, so one boy separated us. I rode his wheel through the "singletrack" and I saw her pull away a bit. We popped out and I put the hammer down again to try and catch back up, but I was never able to quite close that gap, no matter how hard I worked. We crossed the finish line 2nd and 3rd, with some gal who I never saw a minute+ out in front of us.

Finally, a race where I actually got to RACE with someone. THAT was great fun. I didn't get yelled at, I didn't have to pull over, I was pushed to ride as hard as I could and it felt wonderful. While I walked away with a decent finish, I also realize there were only 15 women in our field. I also realize this was a purely physical course. Technical ability played some factor, as you needed to be able to ride the small stretch of single track well, and stick the off camber turns and fast descents, but for the most part one's technical abilities weren't challenged at this course. That's one of the reasons it has such low turnout as well.

The Boarder Battle will be an interesting race. Lots of out of state women who are way faster than most of the WI sport women, but choose to race sport anyway. More technical riding, a longer race, more traffic to deal with. . . . . .I've got my work cut out for me. I can't wait. :-)

My first Sport race

I know you're all on the edge of your seats wondering how today went for me. I'll give you the official "race report" at a later time. . . . .but right now I can tell you I can't remember the last time I've ever had that much fun racing. I can't say as I even remember racing "with" others all that much last year, much less trading places with some of the finest women in WORS. I finished with a smile so big, people didn't even need to ask whether I had fun.

It hurt like hell. . . . and it was a TON of hard work. . . . .but it was awesome. And it was absolutely the right choice for me.

That's the sappy update. Tomorrow I'll recap all the nitty gritty details. But right now I want to savor actually feeling like a mountain bike racer again. Thank you to everyone for their support. It's awesome to have such wonderful, supportive friends and competitors out there. . . . . .people who actually care.

Sweet. Thanks.

My puppy

My puppy is finally starting to grow up.

THAT sure took a long time.

Oh well, I guess I should be happy that it hasn't taken 18 years. . . . . .

Defeated

"Defeat is not the worst of failures. Not to have tried is the true failure."
-- George Woodberry, Poet

I haven't posted recently because I've been wrestling with where I fit into the whole WORS/racing picture. I wanted to make a clear decision, and have time to process that decision before I "announced" it to the "world", as I knew I'd likely receive some criticism. Seeing this quote today reminded me I shouldn't be ashamed of my decision, I tried and I failed. Time to move on. Time to remember what puts that smile on my face again.

Rather than become one of the "statistics" and simply stop racing, I've made the decision to "admit defeat" and go back to Sport for the rest of the year. This decision was actually made somewhat collectively, as I've had numerous supportive e-mails from friends over the past month concerned that I'm not in a good place in regards to racing. These e-mails really got me thinking, and after the race at Franklin, I realized I really am not having fun. I love to ride my bike, but I hate racing elite.

I knew it was going to be tough this year. . . . .but I hadn't anticipated just how tough. And I'm not talking about the fitness level, although that's surely part of it. More so (for me) is the HUGE speed differential between myself and the comp guys, who are on my ass pretty quickly. While I have to admit I've been overwhelmed by the support MOST of them have given me this year, especially these past few races, encouraging me, telling me to stay where I am and don't worry about them, even protecting me from other "less cordial" boys. . . . . .that speed difference is just too much for me. Try as I might, I feel an overwhelming desire to get out of their way so as to not be a "factor" in their race. And how can you let ONE go by, and not the string of 10 behind him? How fair is that? Now I've helped ONE guy's race, but hurt 10 others.

Couple that with the ONE guy who decides to be a jerk and snap at me every race (not the same person each time), and now I'm feeling like all I am is in the way. I'm already maxed out on heart rate, I'm trying to ride as fast and as clean as I possibly can, and now I'm being yelled at to get out of the way. It's like I'm being told "you're not doing a good enough job, just get out of the way". These are all the things that run through my mind during an elite race. THIS is why I'm not having fun.

While I'm not making excuses for my "defeat", I hope that reading what goes on in my mind during a race at least makes people a little more understanding of my decision. I've never won a Sport race, and given the kick ass women in that field this year, I doubt I'll have it easy to even TRY and be a competitor. Due to these factors, I certainly don't consider myself a "sandbagger".

Although I've already made my decision, I'm open to listening to what people have to say about this issue. In fact, I'd rather you voice your opinion here, rather than criticize me behind my back (if this is indeed what you feel the need to do). My decision is made, and interestingly enough, I made this decision only AFTER e-mailing with some of my sport & elite peeps, asking for their feedback on the issue. I was amazed at how supportive people were. . . . .. how they welcomed me back with open arms. How they told me they understood, and that racing was supposed to be fun. If I wasn't having fun, what's the point? I knew the WORS crowd was "different". . . . . .I guess I just didn't realize how absolutely awesome, caring and genuine these people truly are.

I would like to extend a big THANK YOU to those people who have been there for me this year. I'm glad I tried elite this year, but I'm even more glad I'm a big enough person to admit I just don't fit.

I'll see you on the SPORT start line at Sunburst.

Update

As funny as it seems, I squeaked in a 20 minute nap and then went for a 2 hour easy (endurance) spin and I'm much less tired. :-)

I think I'll make it to Tuesday now. . . . . .so there's no need to worry about me. It could be a hell of a lot worse. . . . . .SO. . . . . .it's all good.

I'm tired

I'm tired of having poor race results.

I'm tired of feeling like I'm going to puke while I'm racing.

I'm tired of working so hard at work and getting no where.

I'm tired of being the scapegoat for the market conditions.

I'm tired OF the market conditions.

I'm tired of being told I'm not working hard enough when that couldn't be further from the truth.

I'm tired of not being able to live up to every body's expectations, whether they're professional, athletic or personal. I don't really have as much "power" as everyone seems to think I should/do. I'm just a person.

I'm tired of Mondays.

Interesting quote

"if you care enough for a result, you will most certainly attain it"

-- William James, Psychologist

Geeze, I guess I better start caring more.

Volunteer day

It seems like my days belong to others lately. . . . . .which is strange considering I don't have any kids. But today had me out at the Superweek race in Cedarburg. I marshaled a busy corner. Between older people needing to drive through the course, slow pedestrians crossing the road and a road crash leaving 3 or 4 riders in need of medical attention, it was a busy day. Thankfully it didn't appear the crash inflicted worse than severe road rash. . . . . .but still, it was scary to watch. I think I'll stick to the dirt.

Monday, July 21, 2008

Yes, it is

Yes, it is my birthday.

No, I am not YET 40. Don't rush me. Come January I'll be writing "40" on all my WORS stuff anyway. Please let me have these last few months of "youth".

Yup, we just TOOK OFF

Since we don't have another "camping race" for a while, we decided to pack the "hotel on wheels" and take off to find someplace fun to ride this weekend. Wanting to stay under a 3 hour drive ruled Hatfield out. . . . . . .so Wausau was the next logical option.

We finally drove up through Rib Mountain to check it out. The views were pretty sweet.

The Thunder Puppy got her first real taste of a lake. She wasn't sure what to make of it when the waves from the boats rolled in.

After a couple hours of riding Nine Mile, we returned to our truck to find our puppy running around the parking lot. Apparently she pulled her corkscrew out of the ground. Thankfully she stuck close to the truck. That would have sucked otherwise.

After we got our ride in, we took her out for a bit. She absolutely LOVES to run in the single track behind my bike. It's her "favorite thing". After about 20 minutes of that. . . . . .we finally had a sleepy puppy.

Now it's time to kick back. . . . . .as we listen to the rain pour outside and watch the puddles grow. Safe inside the hotel on wheels, we'll soon pull out a movie. . . . or play a game. . . . . or sit and read . . . . .or surf the internet as we watch the poor tenters scurry for shelter. All while we crank up the radio and adjust our temperature setting for the air conditioning so it's not "TOO cold".

Sweet. I love camping.

On the wagon again. . . . . . .

I'm officially ON the wagon again. A few too many beverages yesterday made for a very shitty ride today. I can't afford shitty rides right now. Every ride I get needs to be a quality ride if I hope to be in any type of decent shape come cyclocross.

I met up with a few peeps at the Kettles today. Not only did I think I was going to puke during my ride, I actually almost passed out. Between the heat, the humidity, my dehydration, and just feeling like total crap, squeezing out a 2 hour ride was a chore. And there was no one to blame but myself. My heart rate was out of control, even the smallest hill would spike it up to the point of near hyperventilation.

BUT, the trails were in great shape. There are lots of nice, new re-routes, lots of new trails to enjoy. Overall, a good time, even if I felt like crap.

Now I'll work on that rehydration, rest and recovery. We'll see what the weekend brings. I have high hopes. :-)

Annual Realtor's Golf Outting

Today is our annual Realtor's golf outing. I don't know how this happens, but once again I managed to get "volunteered" to be on the golf committee. If you know me, you know I'm a very bad golfer. Despite the fact I actually took golf as a class in college, I seem to have retained nothing. In fact, the only time I would hit a good shot in class was when my instructor followed me around and reminded me what to do as I hit.

It's always a "crap shoot" golfing with me. Once in a while I'll get a great hit off, followed by 4 whacks where I top the ball and it goes 3 inches. One never knows. BUT, I'm told I'm "fun" when you put me in a golf cart and add a couple beverages. . . . . . .so I guess that's what today is all about (having fun).

Typically the golf outing falls on the week of my birthday. One year it fell ON my birthday. . . . .that's something you don't want a bunch of Realtor's to know. I don't remember that golf outing all that well (although there seems to be pictures). In fact that was the year people were STILL talking about it at the Christmas party. Yikes. Kind of scary to make THAT kind of impression on people. Thank goodness THAT doesn't happen every year.

I think this year will be a nice, calm day with some "work peeps" out in the sun. I'm golfing with my manager (who, by the way, can get become more "fun" than myself when beverages are added) and her husband. I think we may be a golfer shy, which probably means I get to drive my own cart around. Sweet. I apologize ahead of time if you're programmed into my phone and I call you today. :-)
After the outing we have a delicious dinner and an awesome raffle. I helped with the shopping for this year's prizes, nearly $1200 in prizes. Last year I won a TON of stuff. . . . . hopefully this year will prove as profitable. I have my eye on a few of the items. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Whatever YOUR day brings today, I hope it involves bathing in the sunshine, a little laughter, and a bunch of smiles. Those are MY goals for the day.

SOOOOO tired

I don't know if it's my cold that's almost gone that's making me so tired, or if it's the heat, or the training, or working, or not sleeping all that well, or taking care of everything and everybody. . . . . . .or a great big combination of all of the above. Whatever it is, it's making me REALLY TIRED.

I think I could lay down and sleep for a week.

Finally. . . . .some decent rides

While the cold I managed to catch took me out for a few days, I was able to return to the "land of the living" towards the end of the week and catch a couple nice road rides.

Friday was a nice, slow, leisurely ride with a couple peeps on the interurban trail. We hopped on in Grafton and headed North. 3+ hours later we returned nice and refreshed, and a bit hungry. It was a slow pace, but being that I'm a couple months behind everyone else. . . . .I guess base miles are a good thing. Plus that pace allows for lots of chatting, which is fun sometimes too.

Saturday I took the pace up a couple notches as I ventured out in the overcast day fearing I'd get dumped on. It was a strange ride. I started alone, picked up CK about 30 minutes in and rode with him for about 45 minutes. Then I branched off by myself again to head further north. My goal was to ride through Dundee, so I went for it.
At the corner in Dundee I stopped for the stop sign, only to look over and see my husband talking to an old friend of ours at the Hamburger Haus. He had taken off that morning with a couple other fast peeps to hit the infamous "hill route" (you'd have to ask them what that really is). We both wondered if we'd end up seeing each other as we figured we may be coming back through that area at the same time, and sure enough! So I took the pace up yet another couple notches and hopped on their little train to head back home.

After almost puking up my Cliff bar at the top of a hill 30 minutes later, I thought I'd better take a short cut back and let them catch me. I needed a bit of rest. We all pulled onto our road together (except for CK who I think was already taking a nap). That was the longest road ride I've done this season. A bit over 3 hours, about 54 miles, with an average of 17. And that left me COMPLETELY famished. :-)

Sunday offered up a day of work for me. I had a couple sellers who really wanted open houses, so I had to take care of that. Of course I didn't really have any interested buyers, but I guess that's the way the ball bounces.

Now it's time to get a few chores done, and then take the Thunder Puppy out for some exercise so she'll be a good puppy and do THIS:

Mother Nature

Mother Nature is really a bitch. She rained on my parade. No Kettles ride for us today. . . . .they closed the trails.

Now I'm waiting for the rain to clear so I can get some type of road ride in. Doesn't look like that's going to happen any time soon. What the hell? I thought it was supposed to be sunny and 90 today?!?!?

Stupid dope smokers.

More vacation highlights

What happens when you mix these 3 things?

You get this:

How does this happen?

It's in the 80's, I just spent 9 days pretty much cut off from almost all human contact. . . . . . and somehow I managed to catch a cold yesterday.

What the hell?

Tagged

Ok, I don't want to tag anyone. . . . .but I'll at least play along and tell 6 things since 2 peeps tagged me while I was on vacation. Here are 6 things you maybe didn't know about me.

1) I was born in York Pennsylvania.

2) I played the violin from 4th grade until I was in my second year of college. I also dabbled with the cello, guitar & piano. I played in the youth division of the Milwaukee Symphony (Music for Youth) for 2 years. I also played in a duet at one of our high school concerts, with our full orchestra accompanying. I had a few gigs playing weddings and a few other misc places along the way. Now I haven't touched my violin in at least 15 years.

3) I started college as an elementary education major (I actually wanted to be a music teacher). At the end of my 3rd year I wasn't sure I wanted to be a teacher anymore so I changed my major to sociology with a minor in psychology. I had no idea what I was going to do with that. . . . .I just knew I'd get that stupid Bachelors of Science degree everyone said I "needed".

4) I have great difficulties with people yelling at me. I think it's part of the reason I get so worked up in the elite races this year. I understand people aren't necessarily yelling AT me. . . . . .but I'm overly sensitive in that area. Talking nice to me during a race will get you everywhere.

5) I have an irrational fear of trains and "wind turbines". I'm also not crazy about deep water.

6) I have absolutely no athletic background. I was in forensics and orchestra and never owned a bike (except as a kid) until I met Bill. When I turned 30, I finally decided to become "active". I secretly hate those people who have that natural athletic ability. . . . .the ones who don't have to "train". I thought maybe if I trained really hard for a few years, maybe I could become one of them. Yeah, that's worked well for me.

I hope you enjoyed my little tid bits. I've probably got better ones. . . . .but I'm a little slow today.

Finally back

We're back from vacation, but yet I feel like I need another already. It will probably take me a week to unpack and clean everything up from the week. For some strange reason. . . . . .I'm already looking forward to the next weekend.

We kicked our vacation off at the Levis Trow WEMS race. That was great fun. I did the 25 mile race, which meant 3 laps. When they sent us out, I felt like a racer again. Nestled among a nice sized group of men and women, I worked my way up from the back to settle into a nice position going into the single track. I had to remind myself it wasn't a WORS race. . . . . .I'd be best off getting into that single track sooner vs later, since I can typically ride that stuff relatively well. It felt good to actually pass people and feel like I was among others of the same speed throughout the race. I forget how much I like that feeling.

The course was spectacular. The 25 mile race did the shorter course, but even that was great fun. There was one bridge I didn't feel comfortable with, so I walked it. Other than that, I rode everything relatively well. Unfortunately I didn't plan appropriately. I didn't have enough to eat or drink, and one hard lap was all I could muster. I scaled it back for the second and third laps and rode at an endurance pace. While that felt a lot better. . . . . .it was also WAY more fun.

I only had one, maybe two "near-death" experiences. . . . so that's always good. I also had a fellow blog follower identify me as he passed me, which made me laugh. I forget how many people end up visiting my blog and recognizing my name.

There were only 3 women in the 25 mile race and for various reasons, I was the only one to complete all 3 laps, I took the win. Although there was some mix up as they some how missed my finish. I must have crossed that line SOOOO fast they didn't see me. But it's all good. My fellow racer peeps straightened it out for me.

The rest of the week involved a few more rides at Hatfield (awesome, AWESOME trails), a trip to Standing Rocks (a little tight and twisty for my taste) and some down time to read and just enjoy life. Thunder puppy got lots of hiking time and actually almost died one time (which was scary). She got a little too close to the bluff and almost lost control. Needless to say the rest of the time we were atop the bluffs, she was on the leash.

We rounded out our camping trip at the Chippewa Falls race. The pre-ride was good. . . . . .I did nearly 2 laps. I hit a stump about 10 minutes into the ride planting myself face first in the dirt and adding a couple bruises and scrapes to my battered body. The race was. . . . . . . .well. . . . . . .less than perfect. A few altercations left me worked up and stressed out and had me pulling over time after time to let the comp riders pass by. I was just about to pull the plug and take my DNF when I decided, who cares? I was out there to ride, so I might as well ride. If that meant stopping to get out of the way at times, then so be it. I'm never going to get into race shape if I don't race.

That thought, and the fact that most of the comp riders has passed through had my second lap going MUCH smoother than the first. THAT lap was enjoyable. I felt strong, I rode just about everything clean and kept it under control. Of course I rode by myself, but that's ok. Lap 3 brought more fast boys and a few more pull overs for me, but again more relatively clean riding.

Now it's time to rest and recover. Find some more enjoyable riding, get back to the rides that don't stress me out. . . . .the rides that are fun. And if those rides are by myself (which most of them are), that's A-OK with me.

Updates

We're almost ready to head out on vacation. I can't wait to get on my bike again. I took 2 rest days (Thursday and Friday) and the body is feeling like poopie again. A nice 25 mile ride at Hatfield should do the trick to snap it back to reality.

A couple hours and a few more items to pack and we should be set to go.

A quick update on April for all those who have asked and sent her well wishes. She saw the DR Wednesday. Sounds like the broken bones should heal themselves without any surgery. She was also told she couldn't do any more damage so she can get to backing as the pain permits her to. Of course if you know April at all, you won't be surprised in the least to find out after the doctor told her that, she headed home and sat on her trainer for 30 minutes.

Best wishes to April for a speedy recovery!!

See you all at Eau Claire!

Preparing for vacation

We're heading out this weekend for a week and a half long camping vacation. I'm very much looking forward to sitting on my butt and being "bored". Of course, as it always goes, there's just so much to do before we go. Not only preparation for the trip, but work things as well. Then try and keep your training up on top of that and it leaves one just a little overwhelmed. That's how I feel today.

I did get out for a ride. . . . .body felt like poop. But I logged some miles none-the-less. I pretty much expect to feel like poop most of the time right now. Sooner or later the body will toughen up again, I just have to hang in there until them.

The dog desperately needs a walk, she's walking around the house nudging me and requiring my FULL attention all while whining an absolutely annoying whine. I put her out on her chain and she cries. I put her in the garage and she cries. I bring her in the house and she cries. She's wearing on my LAST nerve.

I still have to finish a few files at the office before we depart, sign our ads up for next week, finish some brochures and deliver them. On top of that I have all the grocery shopping and packing for the week, race prep times two (we're doing the WEMS race at Hatfield), re-stocking the camper, after some time this afternoon I THINK most of my clothes are packed. Still have to do some laundry Friday AM for the last minute items. Then of course I have to pack all of Thunder's things, including food for the entire time we're gone. Thankfully she eats twice a day now. . . .so I shouldn't have to pack AS much. Add to that all the misc packing like books to read, dvd's to watch, games to play. . . . . . .lots of stuff.

All these things to do and all I want to do is sit on my butt. I'm so tired and drained, I can't focus there's so much to do, I just want to take a nap! I don't have the energy to walk the dog, and I'm SO tired of getting eaten alive by the mosquitoes. Two days and we'll be pulling out. . . . . . .I hope I can pull it all off. If I don't end up being "checked in" somewhere I'm sure I'll get it done. I always do. And if I don't? Well, then we leave a little later and I get help.

So it's all good I guess. The week and a half of "me" time will be worth it I'm sure.

Doubling Up

Well, I thought since I really didn't have anything to lose, I might as well try racing the Grafton Criterium on Saturday. . . . .the day before the "marathon race" at Suimaco. After all, it's all training, right?

Saturday had me remembering why I strongly dislike road racing. The women's Cat 4 race was only 20 minutes, so it was balls to the walls full ON. They sent us out with the juniors, so there looked to be a fairly decent size crowd. They "rolled" the racers out and once everyone got clipped in, it was ON. My total race time was about 26 minutes, AHR of 184. I held on as long as I could, but the main pack spit me out all too soon. After a few laps on my own, I finally caught up to Amy, who had also been spit out and we worked together to bridge a gap up to the next gal. Her and her teammate sucked our wheel and when we hit the final stretch, it was a sprint to see who'd end up where. I jumped too soon and couldn't quite hold it and the other gal caught me. I barely held off Amy and we finished the race out in 10th and 11th. I maxed my heart rate out for that sprint finish at 196. I crossed the line and thought I was going to be sick. I was dizzy, my chest burned and I was so VERY glad to be done. A bit harder effort than I thought I'd get. Oh well, too late now.

After hanging to watch the Pro race for a bit I headed back home to try and get some shut eye. Hit the pillow at 10:00ish, only to sleep absolutely terrible. It was so incredibly hot, I felt sticky and sweaty, even though I had showered. I tossed and turned and finally fell asleep only to awake to the birds chirping soon after 4:00am. I knew the alarm was set for 4:40 since we had to get an early start and pick up a couple peeps. I just wanted another 4 hours of sleep in a nice, chilled room. No such luck.

We arrived at the WORS scene in plenty of time to get Arin registered for her race and set to go. Chatted with some peeps, registered ourselves, ate an early lunch and then it was time to get ready. Warm up was a bit tough. I was concerned that my legs felt awfully tired. . . . .but again, it was too late to worry about it. All I could do was give it my best.

Don yelled GOOOOOOOOOO!!, the gals took off and I hung on the wheel of Amelia down the first open stretch. My legs were tired, but I had high hopes they would loosen up and let me put out some serious effort. We weren't but about 2/3 of the way to the first set of single track when the comp guys flew by like we weren't moving. At that time, I was already off the back riding my own race. I knew I would hit the single track amongst the comp guys. . . . . .great. Again, I rode the single track like I've never ridden it before. My heart felt like it was going to explode, I was hyper ventilating, but somehow I kept it out of the trees and I got the HELL out of their way. Finally an open break to recover. Then time to do it all again, and again.

By the end of the first lap most of the comp guys had gotten by me. Again, I was all alone. Keeping my motivation wasn't an issue. I was able to ride at a relatively hard heart rate, although down a notch from where it usually is. Then came the sport boys. They're not the best at passing. I think they don't usually get to pass people. . . . .so calling it out and/or waiting for a good spot to pass wasn't their strong point. A few didn't give quite enough time before they cut back in, thankfully I have "skills" so it was all good.

Nearing the end of lap 2 the twinges started to set in. I quickly scanned my watch going under the start line, and it looked like my first lap was about 58 minutes. My second lap must have been about 1:02, it looked like I was at about 2:00 crossing through. I knew the last lap was going to hurt. I was right. The first two laps were fun. Even though I thought I was going to die in that single track I had to ride it so freakin' fast, it was still fun. Lap #3 HURT. A LOT!

I managed to suck down about 1/3 of my camel back, but then also got 2 bottles down as well. 2 packages of cliff blocks (could have used one more), completed my intake for the 3:05. How I made it back to the finish chute during that last lap I'm not quite sure. I literally cried while I was riding, the pain and cramping was so intense. I fidgeted on my seat as to not let the cramps set FULL ON. The knot in my shoulder was huge, my back hurt SOOO bad I was just waiting for it to completely seize up, and my legs were not only cramping but they were simply running out of energy.

"Just finish, just finish" I kept hearing in my head. I think it was April that was saying it. Every time I passed the tree that she tangled with I pushed myself harder. I had to push beyond the pain and finish in as good of time as I possibly could because I knew she was at home, in pain, wishing me enough courage, energy and motivation to do so. . . . . . .because she couldn't.

While I faded that last lap, I amazingly finished. I didn't get lapped by the Elite boys, I didn't get lapped by the Elite women, and I wasn't dead last. I didn't hit my target of finishing in under 3 hours. . . ..but I was only 5 minutes off. Considering I wasn't sure I'd even GET to the finish line, I'm ok with being 5 minutes off my "goal".

So I do believe I've learned that an intense, high heart rate workout the day before a WORS race is a bad thing. I've also learned that I should probably take just a little more food with me when I'm going to be out there so long. AND I've learned I need to focus on long training rides at the moderately high heart rate so my body doesn't freak out after 2 hours and decide it wants to shut down.

But it was still fun. I could have done without the cramps and all the damage that has done now. . . . . . . .and honestly the last lap was a little less than fun. . . . . . .but overall, it was fun. :-) Sweet.

Quote

"It takes as much energy to wish as it does to plan."
-- Eleanor Roosevelt, Former First Lady

Hhhhmm, is that really true? Sometimes when I'm "wishing", I think I AM "planning".

This morning I RE-REGISTERED for the Grafton Crit. They screwed up the categories earlier in the week, so when I registered for the "Juniors & Cat 4 women", it actually put me as a Junior. They couldn't fix it, so I had to RE-REGISTER, so now instead of the $10 I was told it cost to race that one, I'm actually spending the $32.80 to on-line register, PLUS the $2.40 for the fees I incurred for my first registration. Supposedly there will be a $10 refund waiting for me when I sign in, for the cost of the actual junior's race. So at least I won't have to pay THAT money as well (hopefully).

$35.20 is a lot of money to pay to race 20 minutes. They better have some pretty sweet prizes for those top girls. That's more expensive than a 2+ hour mountain bike race. No wonder I pick the mtb scene. Definitely more bang for your buck.

BUT, it's a short race and I'm not doing a pre-ride. . . . . . .so the effort put out should just about equal out. HOPEFULLY. I can't really afford to be tired going into Sunday. That's going to be a LONG race. That's ok. I need a long "training ride". :-)

Tangle with a tree. . . . .and the tree always wins

We found that out first hand today.

Spent some time in the saddle at Suimaco with some peeps today when a tree jumped out and grabbed one of them. She bounced off one tree, only to throw her back SMACK into another one. After a few hours in the ER she finds out she's cracked 3 bones in her back.

Why the F do the trees always have to win? My heart goes out to her. Unfortunately I know all too well how she's feeling. It's hard to sit by the sidelines and watch people do what YOU love to do. BUT. . . .on the brighter side of things. . . .6 weeks is a drop in the bucket of life. And before we know it, she'll be rockin' it out again, stronger than ever.

Get well soon April. REALLLLLLLY soon. :-)

Beechwood Fun

Yeah, I still like to ride my mountain bike. I guess I just don't like to "race" it right now. But I'm working on that.

Beechwood was a blast. If you're looking to find your fitness, that's a good place to start. We got a "modified" lap and a half in, which was perfect. Hit the hills hard, at least I still have short bursts in me. I didn't wear my heart rate monitor, which was strange. I'm not sure I can race without it, because it's too easy to ride "easy". It keeps me honest. If I hear it beeping (which it does when I drop back into endurance) I know to take it up a notch cuz I'm not trying hard enough. I think my ride last night had me trying hard as much as I could. . . . . which is ok, except in a 2+ hour race I'm going to poop out if I'm pushing that hard for the entire time. We'll see.

Off to ride at Suimaco today. Get some more endurance miles in. I'm working on that fitness kids. Slowly but surely. Then maybe I'll stop bitching on this blog. :-)

My horoscope for the day

"This is a terrific time for you to start some sort of physical activity that takes you out of the house and gets your blood pumping, dear Cancer. Don't think that this means you need to join a tennis club and suddenly become the star player. A simple walk around the block every morning may be all that is needed for you to feel the boost in physical and mental energy that this kind of activity will grant you. Note also the clarity of mind that comes when you get your body moving and increase your rate and depth of breathing."

Hhhhmmmm, I guess I need to go ride my bike!

CAT'S DIARY

Day 983 of my captivity.

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape.

In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am.

Bastards!

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.

The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now...

Subaru Cup

It just wasn't there. The heart rate was too high which makes me sloppy in the technical sections, my stomach felt like someone punched me in it, and I just wasn't having fun. It hurt, I was so far behind everyone else I probably would have gotten lapped twice, and I felt the need to double up in pain. So, I pulled the plug.

There aren't any excuses really. I simply don't have the fitness I need to be racing elite. When there's that much of gap, and you're suffering that much, it just isn't fun anymore, even if you really want it to be fun. I realize that's difficult for most people to understand, because most of you haven't been in the shoes I'm in right now. Yes, I understand I'm the one who put myself here. . . . .but now that I'm here I just need to figure out how to go on and make the best of it. Get back to having fun. I'm not sure I know how to do that after this weekend.

Day by day I guess.

SUN. . . . . .please

No more rain please.

How about some sunshine? We don't need any more puddles for this thing to play in while we're camping.

Although the weather people are painting a little different picture than I think we'd like to see right now.

Floods, Floods, Floods

I don't WANT any more rain. How am I supposed to focus on my training when all the trails are under water?

I took the road bike (her name is Sydney) out yesterday. .. . . . .yeah, I think it had been a month since I had been on it. Looks like her and I will be getting to know each other again this month. I'd rather be on the dirt. . . . . but I'll take what I can get right now. Maybe I should take up kayaking?

Tonight is my last yoga class. That means next week I'll have the option of riding with my peeps at Beechwood. Yeah, if it's not under water.

Mt. Morris should be interesting. I guess it really can't get much worse than the Sport/Citizen race last year!

WOW!

How the "F" did I get SO out of shape???

Crap.

Hhmmm, so I need twice as long as I took off to get back to where I was?? Well, I guess that means I should be ready for WORS 2009.

Double crap.

Baby steps, I know. :-)

Woman's Dirt Retreat

Two words. . . . . . .FREAKIN' AWESOME.

Despite the less than perfect weather, this weekend was worth every penny. The Mad FORCS & Renee Callaway sure know what they're doing. They organized a first class event. From the delicious sandwich & salad lunch, the pasta & pizza dinner, the tasty Sobe drinks and the yummy breakfast spread to the awesome raffle prizes to the patient and knowledgeable instructors to the absolutely awesome Allison Dunlap. Each and every aspect was incredible.

If you would have told me 5 years ago that some day I'd be attending a dirt camp retreat and not only learning from one of the WORLD'S best mountain bikers, but hanging out and talking with her, I would have laughed in your face. But that's exactly what I did this weekend.

If you've ever met Allison Dunlap, you know what I'm talking about. This woman is one of THE nicest people you will ever meet. It's hard to believe she's one of THE world's best mountain bikers when you meet her. She's so down to earth and pleasant. She's a wealth of knowledge and this weekend she sat back and let us draw upon that knowledge. We fired question after question at her and she gladly answered each and every one of them and overloaded us with information.

She also spent one on one time with each of us, teaching us a few technical skills and watching each of us to assure we had picked them up. She even went out on the trails with us and did some technical riding. . . . .until the tornado sirens sounded, the rain started pouring and we were summonsed to head back to safety.

I would rate this weekend as one of the highlights of my "biking life". To spend that much time with someone that important. . . . . .and learn the things I did from her, was priceless.

NOW, it's GO time. Time to batten down the hatches and REALLY train. I'm motivated, I'm ready and I'm excited. After all. . . .it's never too late, even for someone like ME. Sweet.

Friday, June 06, 2008

It's almost Dirt Retreat time!

Yes, I'm going HERE this weekend.

I'm sure I'll learn SOMETHING. How can one NOT learn SOMETHING from a two-time Olympian, former World AND National Champion?

I guess if I can't hang out with Lance Armstrong any time soon. . . . .this is the next best thing.

Cool.

Over Worked

Over worked, under paid. . . . . ..time to shift the priorities.

In the end, WHAT really matters?

Whatever that is. . . . . .is probably what you should focus on. For many, it's their kids. For some it really is "work". For some it's preparation for their future, setting the future for their kids, helping others, making more money, gaining that promotion, being in the best shape of their lives. . . . . .etc, etc, etc.

With the big "39" a bit over a month away, perhaps it's time to once again figure out what is important for ME again. It's easy to lose sight of what makes YOU happy when you spend most of your time helping others be happy. Some of us are just prone to taking TOO much on, and losing what's important to them in the process (eg RIDING MY BIKE). While helping others does ultimately make me happy, if it isn't done carefully that "happiness" can come at a high price.

With that said. . . . .it's back to being all about me again, at least for a little while. I seem to be best for others when I have my OWN balance and am happy myself. So let's try that for a while. Back to the bike, back to training, back to spending time with friends & family, watching what I eat and saying "No" to others once in a while, when I truly don't have the time.

Wausau

The new camper was great. . . . much nicer than the old one. The tear down needs a bit of work. . . . .it seemed to take us a lot longer to pack up.

The race was ok. I've decided I'm very disappointed in myself in general. . . . .but such is life. My goals for this race were simple. Finish the race, don't hurt myself, stay out of the way. I accomplished them all. I really wasn't sure how racing 2+ hours at a high heart rate would go for me. . . . .since the last ride I had done (before pre-ride) was Monday's ride at Suimaco. But I survived an average heart rate of 181 for 2:20. . . . .so that's a good thing. My laps were even somewhat consistent (45 min, 47 min, 48 min - roughly), so that's good too I guess. I got off my bike a few times to let comp riders pass through. . . . . .but I also rode my ass off a number of times through the single track as well, just to stay out of the way.

I can't believe we've already finished the 3rd race of the season and instead of ramping up my training, I'm finding excuses to do other "more important" things. I think this is what a lot of women contemplating elite must go through. I know we've seen a number of them come and go over the years, bounce back and forth from Sport to Elite and back again. I think honestly there is just SUCH a big gap in the very small woman's elite field, it makes those of us finishing at the bottom wondering why even bother? It's not like I can pull 20 or 30 minutes out of my ass at a race. . . . . .even if I hire a professional coach and start training 8 hours a day. It simply isn't going to happen. Can I gain a few minutes? Sure. But that still leaves me towards the bottom. . . . . .so does it really matter? Why not do other things I enjoy?

These aren't really questions I'm looking for answers on, these are just things that float around in my mind. Obviously if I train 3 or 4 hours a week I'm only going to continue to lose more fitness. . . . . .but going back to the 8-10 hours a week I used to do seems like a lot of work considering I'm only going to gain a couple minutes at best.

So I guess it once again all boils down to fun. So far, I'm still having fun. I'm discouraged because I'm "out of shape". . . . . .but being out there riding my bike is still fun. Wausau left me feeling very impressed with the support and kindness of the other riders out there with me. I can't even tell you how many people encouraged me to keep going, complimented me on my single track skills, told me I was doing great. . . . . .those comp and elite boys were simply nice as well as all the "screaming spectators".

It's a different world out there, racing among people where YOU are now the slowest. It takes a little adjustment, a lot of motivation to keep pushing, and a bit of humility. It's easy to judge when you're not wearing the shoes. I guess right now I'll be happy that I'm even trying to wear the shoes. Who cares if they don't fit? At least I'm trying. :-)

Another weekend bites the dust

Thanks to CK for the wonderful race post regarding the 12 hours at New Fane. It was once again a success thanks to all our wonderful team members, friends & family and all the racers of course! While I do enjoy putting that race together, I'm glad it's now behind me so perhaps I can finally start training!!

Sunday we did race course clean up and I got 4 laps in myself. A bit under 2 hours. I was feeling completely lethargic and SLOW. . . . . .even more so than usual. But I got a nice ride in and tear down went quite fast. The weather was nice as well, which made riding all that much better.

Monday Captain had to work so I headed up to the Reforestation Camp with some peeps. A bit drained from Sunday, I had to take it down to endurance to get my ride in. Just shy of 2.5 hours, overall a good time. I think these last 2 days I've ridden more than I have in the past 2 weeks. Yikes! No wonder I'm tired (and slow). :-)

Back to the real world tomorrow. I'm so not ready. My house is a disaster, there are doggie hair balls everywhere, crushed beetles, stuffing pieces from Thunder's toys. . . . .I need another weekend just to rest and get caught up on clean up. Yeah. Guess that's not gonna happen.

SOLD

We decided to keep the old dog. . . . . .but we sold the camper.

Yes, that was in less than 48 hours. If I can sell a camper that quickly. . . . .just IMAGINE how quickly I could sell your home. . . .or your neighbor's home. . . .or your friend's home. . . .or a relative's home. . . . .

Sell or Buy with Brittany Nigh. :-)

Race Recap

Yeah, I don't have one. I didn't race. I was one of the idiots who fell in the rock garden on pre-ride and hurt myself enough that I couldn't be at the start line on Sunday. So much for having skills.

For some strange reason. . . . . .I'm not too upset about not being able to race.

Props to those who were brave enough to endure 4 laps of that course. Awesome job.

For Sale - CHEAP

15+ year old Black Lab, lives by her stomach, wakes up 10 minutes earlier every day, thinks it's time to eat the moment she wakes up. . . . .thinks it's time to eat ALL the time actually. Barks continuously until fed (then you've got about an hour of silence if you're lucky), mostly deaf, low patience tolerance, molting like a bird, can only walk about 2 blocks at a time before needing a nap, doesn't care much for German Shepherd Puppies.

Is it Friday yet?

Somehow I lost a day. I keep thinking it's Thursday today. . . . .all day I seem to have had that problem.

While I am not looking forward to the Lake Geneva race this weekend. . . . .knowing what the course was like LAST year. . . . . .I am looking forward to camping again this weekend. Which reminds me. . . . . .we'll be looking to put our camper on the market in the next few days. We need to get it set up this weekend and snap some pictures, do the run down on what it's all got, and then we'll get it on the market. We're ready to make the next move up the ladder. . . . .or so we think. After hearing what the retaining wall at our duplex will cost us. . . . .maybe we'll be LIVING in the camper. . . . .but whatever.

So if you know anyone looking for a reasonably priced camper. . . . . . .let me know. It's in very good shape, lots of room. I'll keep you posted on the details.

Monday Miles

While Monday started off a bit cool in temps, I decided the rising numbers on the scale wouldn't allow me to sit and NOT ride. . . . . . .so I bundled up and headed on out on the road bike for a ride. The temps only read 43, but the sun was shining and I had the time, so I really didn't have an excuse (even though I tried to come up with one).

I thought heading to the State Forest Headquarters to drop off our Special Use Permit for the 12 hour race at New Fane might be a good option. That way I couldn't try and cut my ride short. . . . .I knew I'd be out at least 1:45 with a destination in mind.

Apparently my 2 hour mountain bike ride at New Fane Saturday took more of a toll then I thought it would because raising my heart rate was a complete chore. My mid 160's felt like upper 170's and my legs immediately filled with lactic acid. I guess that's one of the downfalls of losing your fitness. . . . .rides seem to hurt a lot more lately. But I bucked it up. . . .I had a destination I had to get to.

With all the back roads I take on my bike and in my car, I rarely get lost. Yesterday, I got lost! I knew roughly were I was, so maybe you can't really call it getting lost. . . . .but I was on several roads I'd never been on and my ride was extended a bit as it took me longer to get to my destination with a few wrong turns. But the scenery was pretty, the birds were chirping and there weren't a lot of cars so it was just fine.

I think it took me a whole hour before I could hit a hill and have at least a little energy. Unfortunately that didn't last long. . . .. . .about 90 minutes in that energy faded and the hills started to hurt again.

My ride was a reminder of my lack of fitness. It was also a reminder that I really don't like to ride my road bike. It's a good break I guess, and it certainly does help you train into shape for the mountain bike, but the mountain bike is where time stands still for me. That's where I'm in touch with nature, where I can demand things from my body that it can't normally do, where I can push the limits physically and mentally. That is where my love truly is.

On the mountain bike, I also don't have to endure 75 year old men on motor bikes yelling at me for not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign. . . .only to see them slowly coast through the stop sign ahead. I don't have to worry about almost getting clipped off by some asinine driver who thinks it's funny to see how close they can get to the chick on the bike without picking her off. I don't have to worry about dogs trying to race me, people thinking I'm not moving and pulling out in front of me, or stupid people hanging out in their yard shouting stupid words at me.

And you wonder why I don't enjoy the road bike as much?

I wrapped up the ride yesterday at a whopping 16 something mph average - I guess I'm even SLOWER than I thought I was. 2:25. Mostly enjoyable. The more exciting thing is, today my body actually feels a little better vs feeling drained. That's kind of strange. I guess we'll see how the work day pans out. Hopefully I can squeeze in a little mountain bike ride this afternoon between work, the rain showers we're supposed to see and my yoga class this evening. We'll see.

Weekend wrap up

Monday morning seems to be when I get time to do the weekend wrap up. And quite a weekend it was.

Saturday we spend the day at New Fane, getting ready for the 12 hours at New Fane race, Memorial Day weekend. The DNR is nice enough to let us create some temporary trails for that day. . . . .and that's what we laid out. With a nice sized crew we put the rakes to work and added 3 sections of twists and turns amidst the fast, open track. After everything was laid out, we put it to the test and rode. Fun stuff. We'll need just a little more work out there before the big day, grooming a few of those turns. The laps took me about 28 minutes at a moderate speed. Pretty fun stuff.

Sunday we AGAIN awoke to our 15 year old black lab telling us it was time to get our butts out of bed and feed her. That's really getting old. But once she's up and fed, she typically goes back to bed. And that's what we did as well. Our little Thunder wasn't ready to get out of bed. . . . .she had a play mate for the trail work day. She played her little heart out and she slept MOST of the day Sunday. We had to go purchase her some Benedryl tho'. She woke up with her snout about twice the size from some type of bug bite poor thing. And she's such a sensitive puppy. .. . . .try and touch her when she's not feeling good and whimpers you'll hear.
A few errands, some odds and ends, and an afternoon/evening with Bill's family for his dad's birthday and Mother's day and that wrapped up our weekend. Bill seems to have pinched a nerve in his neck/shoulder, or pulled a muscle or something, as it hurt all weekend, making it virtually impossible for him to lift any weight (including Thunder) yesterday. From what I hear, today is even worse. Guess we'll be prompting him to call the DR to figure that out today.

I can't believe it's Monday again already. Crap.

Thunder puppy is right at home

Camping this past weekend with the puppy was better than expected.

She hopped up on the couch and made herself right at home (although at home she is not allowed on the couch). Of course I know we should be happy. . . . . .I hear some puppies jump right up on the kitchen table.

Other than being a little antsy Saturday afternoon/evening, she did very well. Slept through the night, didn't whimper much, met LOTS of new friends, got lots of compliments on how pretty she was, got laughed at cuz her ears often form a triangle on top of her head and napped through our whole race.

I think the whole "she's so pretty" comments went right to her head. She seems a little stuck up now if you ask me.

Overall she's a pretty good puppy. She's got those moments of terror, where all you can do is shove her back in her crate and hope for brighter moments. . . . . .but when she gets enough exercise and lovin', she's pretty darn good.

So sore!

Wow. That extra lap sure adds some extra soreness to the body. As if it's not hard enough doing 90 minutes at an AHR of 181, add another 34 and I'm ready to trade this model in for a younger one with more upgrades.

Today I felt a little better in terms of major aches and pains and I had a tad bit more energy. But the muscles that were/are tweaked are REALLY tweaked.

After 75 minutes of yoga (the relaxation kind) and 60 minutes of intense, deep massage, I'm thinking I'm about ready to turn the corner tomorrow. Either that, or I'll not be able to get out of bed. One or the other is a sure bet.

I tried a short hike with Thunder today. . . .only made it 40 minutes and my body was toast. I'd better find my endurance soon or I'll NEVER get to train. I'll be recovering all the time. :-)

First Elite Race

My first elite race was what I would consider a success.

The weekend had a whole different undertone. I can't even explain it, it was just different. I didn't have the nerves I always have. I didn't have to hit the bathroom 5 times in the morning. I wasn't nervous on the preride. I didn't cry during the national anthem (well, ok, I did tear up on that one, but not as much as usual). I didn't almost puke when Don said GOOOOOOOOO because I was so unbelievably nervous. It was just different. I wasn't even nervous. It was something I'm TOTALLY not used to.

I had a plan. My plan was to finish 4 laps, hopefully somewhat consistently, not to bonk big time on lap 4, to NOT pull over when I was passed but instead to hold my line or pull to the side a bit but keep moving, not to get worked up if I encountered any "less than cordial boys passing me" and to finish, hopefully not dead last, but if that was the case, so be it. And I accomplished just about all of those goals.

We lined up at the start and as I'm conversing with my peeps, I'm looking ahead of me and behind me at ALL the boys I see. The thoughts running through my head were "holy crap, ALL these boys are going to have to pass me at some point". And "wow, I'm out of my league standing here". And "crap, I hope I can make all 4 laps". Don yelled GOOOOOO and off we went. The start wasn't as fast as I was prepped for it to be, however I'm a fast starter so I was right at home redlining it out of the gate.

Lap one I pulled an insane pace. I was breathing so hard I thought my lungs were going to explode. The top comp guys caught me about 2/3 the way through the first lap. We dumped into tight single track sections with me wedged between comp boys. I rode like I've never rode before. I had no idea I could even ride technical sections that fast. . . . . .let alone that clean. I wanted to stay out of the way and avoid pissing anyone off. My heart rate was insane. My head kept saying "there is NO way you can hold this for 4 laps". But I didn't care. I did what I could and figured how am I going to know, unless I try? I managed to hit my lap timer for each lap and the first one took me a hair over 29 minutes (29:16). Off to lap 2.

Lap 2 was similar to lap 1, riding at or over LT for most of it, hammering it as hard as i possibly could through the single track to stay out of the way, pulling the pace back a bit on the flats to let people around me. I still rode relatively clean, pulled a 31:40.

Lap 3 I thought I was going to die. I kept thinking "if I was in sport, this would be it". I was so tired I made a few stupid mistakes. I dropped my chain going into one section and that prompted a group of comp/elite boys to be on my tail. I biffed a tree, cranked my gears, and had to pull over to let them by, about 4 times. I got a little angry at myself, kept wondering how in the WORLD I was going to do a 4th lap when I wasn't even sure I was going to get through this one. . . . . then I yelled at myself and said "who cares?!?" I took a deep breath, concentrated on riding clean and forgot those around me. That seemed to work MUCH better. According to my watch, that one took me 32:03. Had I not had to do a 4th lap, I think I could have pulled a little quicker time on lap 3. . . .but looking at sport, it looks like those lap times alone would have put me in the top 10, which is cool.

Lap 4 was much more relaxed. Only a few passing me, a much calmer pace. . . . . .one of my goals was also to make it up all the hills on ALL the laps vs having to walk anything on lap 4. It hurt like hell, but I did it. I saw Christine just ahead and tried to keep my pace up so she didn't put to large of a gap on me. Again, I rode the single track hard, rested on the flats when I needed to. . . . .tried to ride clean. Then I hit those stupid downhill, off camber turns towards the end. EVERY SINGLE YEAR I endo there and this year wasn't the exception. My first 2 laps I rode them like a pro, my 3rd lap I fumbled a bit, my 4th lap I sailed over the bars and face planted in the dirt. Idiot. I got up, shook myself off, watched the Goat ride effortlessly past me, assessed any damage and rode on. I was so close to the finish I could almost smell it. I wanted to be done. I hopped back on and rode my heart out. Christine was long gone but there were a few boys on my tail. I tried to stay out of their way and get to the finish in one piece. I succeeded.

Almost every boy that passed me was kind and courteous. Many of them knew me by name and cheered me on. Some of them even coached me though the turns, helping me ride even faster. Only a couple were less than nice, and I didn't let that bother me. Overall, a success.

4 laps, 2:04:40, AHR 181. 17th out of 20. A couple dumb mistakes, one endo. . . . . . . .my first elite race under my belt. Sweet. It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

Yeah, I suck

I know. I haven't updated in a coon's age (what exactly IS a coon's age). I haven't been the most positive lately and I felt I may be best off not bringing that into the blogsphere. BUT, I'm doing better today.

Work has been crazy, seriously. Don't believe all this crap you hear about the housing market being in the toilet, homes not selling, EVERYBODY and their brother being foreclosed on, yeah, it's just not that bad of a picture. The media has a way of making EVERYTHING all doom and gloom.

This past weekend I was a "single parent". It was tough, but I made it through. Saturday the weather was less than perfect so I opted for a trainer ride. Yes, a trainer ride. Sometimes I really don't mind the trainer. I get to watch a movie, I get to keep an eye on my puppy and she gets to explore the basement instead of being stuffed in her crate for an additional 2 hours. So the ride was good. Then Squirt came over and we took Thunder out for a little hike to release some of her energy. Seriously, she's SOOO much better if she gets her hikes. If she gets no exercise (like the past 3 days), she's a little terror.

Sunday I took her to puppy class by myself. . . . . . .and her sister was there. It was a riot to see the two of them together. They didn't care about any other puppies, they only wanted to play with each other. It was the cutest thing.

After that I headed down to Muir for another mtb ride with my peeps. Thank GOODNESS it was better than the week before. CK was nice enough to swap out my tires so I had some new treads on there. Holy cow did that make a difference. I no longer had to try and corner like a citizen rider. Sweet. Another ride out to Emma and back. I was working a cold out of the body so I wasn't feeling the best. . . . .but it was a good ride none-the-less.

After that, the cold seemed to really want to get a hold of me. Sunday night had me sleeping like CRAP and feeling like I was going to puke. Thankfully that passed and Monday I hit the pillow at 8pm. Slept MUCH better. Yesterday I was wiped, but not feeling too crappy. Today just some sinus pressure, but ok. After taking Thunder for an hour hike, I'm a little tired. . . . . but I think I'll still have enough energy to hit the dirt on my own for a bit this afternoon.

I was nervous cuz the yaking flu is going around. That's one thing I do NOT do well at. I'd rather have my head feel like it's going to explode than to yak for 24 hours. Seriously. I'll just keep the fingers crossed that doesn't come my way.

So that's my update. Boring as usual. First WORS race this weekend, a camper to pack, groceries to buy, puppy stuff to organize, bikes to get ready. . . . . .and work, work, work to do. Yeah, it will be a "fun" next couple days. Can't wait to kick back Friday night at Iola pines with a cocktail.

Beautiful temps

I'm truly liking the weather these past few days. Even yesterday with the morning storms (yes, it POURED here). . . . . .topped off with sunshine and WARM temps again. Nice! It's hard to NOT be in a good mood when the sun is shining, the birds are chirping and the temps warrant NO jacket!

I took Monday and Tuesday off from working out. I had "planned" to do a ride yesterday, but had such a stressful day by the time it finally ended, I just looked forward to making some delicious food and laying low. My body was still sore from the weekend, riddled with stress knots and my puppy was ALL wound up from spending half the day in her crate. I felt it was more important to take her for a little walk and take some time to myself. Today I know I made the RIGHT choice. :-)

I FINALLY got a very good night's sleep last night, leaving me refreshed and ready to conquer all my "stuff" today. THAT was awesome. I even ended up with some time to take Thunder for a 50 minute hike. Now she should sleep like a baby while I go ride my bike tonight with my friends. Cool.

Amazing weather

So they thought it would be cooler and rain for most of the weekend. Once again, they were wrong. Thankfully this time they were wrong in OUR favor.

Friday allowed me some time to take Thunder down to Blue again and hike the trails some more. She really enjoys getting out and getting exercise. It makes her a MUCH better puppy. Guess that's what Cesar says. . . . most "naughty" dogs simply don't get enough exercise.

Friday night we introduced Thunder to her first camping experience. We thought it would be a good idea to do a test run before we subject her to a weekend away on race weekend. As we thought, she settled in just fine, playing with her toys, enjoying being around people. She whimpered a little around 5am when Bill got up to head to the bathroom, but he pottied her and she was back asleep until about 6:40. Sweet.

Saturday Bill and I waffled back and forth trying to decide what to do for a ride when my phone rang. Some new peeps from our team were planning on heading down to Blue and wanted to know how the trail conditions were. That sealed it for me. Bill took off on the road bike, I headed down to Blue to ride with them. I'm too out of shape to ride any intensity for too long, so I managed a 85 minute ride with some efforts before I headed back home to relax.

Sunday we debated back and forth if we should head down to try and race Rock Cut, or hit the trails at Muir. Muir won. Tons of peeps there. . . . . .I rode alone, questioned my existence, wondered why the HELL I decided to move up, why I didn't train more or at LEAST do what I did last year. . . . .I face planted once, in the pines mind you. . . .on the FLAT STUFF. What an idiot. I didn't see the tree stump and hit it head on. My bike stopped abruptly, I kept going. I forgot how much I dislike flying over the handle bars.

While the weather was absolutely beautiful, my ride left something to be desired. Probably FITNESS. I've decided it's MUCH more fun to ride when you have fitness. Without it, it's a HELL of a lot of work. Today, I just wanted to be done. 2:30, a few scrapes, a couple bruises, and hopefully one step closer to not making a fool of myself this season. Oh well. It's too late to cry now. Instead, I'll just try to have some fun. I THINK I still remember how to do that.

A glimpse of Spring

The sun popped out, the birds were chirping, the wind was blowing at phenomenal speeds. . . . and the temps slowly rose into the 70's. What beautiful day.

Most of my afternoon was tied up so my ride waited until the evening yesterday. Thankfully Mother Nature decided to smile on us with warm temps well into the evening. . .. .so a 6:00 ride time was perfect.

A group of us met down at Blue to get a nice mtb ride in. Thunder came along and hung out in the back of the truck. . . . .I think she thinks it is like one HUGE crate. She just sat in there, played with her toys. Watched stuff going on. So far, so good.

We assembled at 6:00 and set off to ride soon after. Tweak had an early mishap and as the girls circled back through the lot we found him perched on the back of his truck with a nice cut on his leg. Too much power I guess. . . . . .pulled right out of his pedal, almost flipped over the bars and managed to mess up his front wheel in the process. Poor guy.

Shooter, Squirt and myself rode most of the time together. I rode so hard I puked in my mouth. . . .and not just a little bit. It was so much I had to spit it out. I guess that means we were riding hard. Really I think it means I'm out of shape. Whatever.

We hit the "new trail" a couple times, once both ways. We hit the hills hard. . . . .tried to work the turns fast. . . . . .chatted on the flats. I decided I'm way behind where I should be, but then I also decided I didn't really care all that much. This season will be a learning curve. My goal is to finish every race, hopefully not finish last in EVERY race and to have fun. If I can't meet those goals, I need to find something else to do with my time. Yes, mountain biking is hard work. . . . .but for me, it's supposed to be fun. The day that stops is the day I should reconsider my fitness goals, my goals in life, etc.

This morning proves to be another nice morning. The showers are supposed to be moving in a little later. I'll have to try and get Thunder out for another hike sometime this morning. It will be an off day from riding for me. . . . .but it's deceiving how difficult hiking with her can get. When I wear my heart rate monitor, I'm actually in my endurance zone hiking. Of course I'm using different muscles and such. . . . .BUT it's still exercise and at this time in my life, that's what I need. Exercise with my puppy. That way we BOTH win. Sweet.

Weekend

Sorry peeps, not a lot of exciting riding for me over the weekend. I'm probably the ONLY one who didn't do crap, but such is life.

Saturday I sat my butt on the trainer which was just fine with me since the snow was flying nicely. Is it December? Oh wait, no, it's APRIL. Yes, that's it.

Sunday was an action packed day. We took Thunder to her first "puppy class" where she met about a dozen other German Shepherds. She was the youngest one there at just under 12 weeks. Most of the others were around 4 months, and 4 or 5 of them were litter mates. Thunder did nicely, a bit timid at first unsure about all the barking, but then she settled in just fine. She "socialized" with everybody, came when called, sat when told to sit, climbed through the little tunnels (confidence building drills), etc. She really didn't want to leave, she just wanted stay and play with her new friends. But we dragged her home and headed out to New Fane for a hike.

New Fane is already in excellent condition. Almost dry with just a few wet spots. Some debris down on the trail. . . . .but nothing TOO bad. A tree here and there. We looked over some of the sections we'd like to add again. . . . and they look good. Our 12 hour race should once again prove to be a good time.

The weather people say today is the last day of "winter", at least for this week. I sure hope they're right. We're planning a mtb ride Wednesday after work at Glacial Blue in West Bend if anyone is interested. They SAY it's going to hit 66 on Wednesday. I sure need that!

Where

Is the sunshine and warm temps???

Better late than never

As I sit here at my kitchen table at 5:30am on a Tuesday morning, I'm reminded of the beauty this world possesses. While we've had only a brief glimpse of spring, I can hear the birds chirping outside. . . . .I can see the tulips and daffodils slowly poking out of the ground. . . . . . the sun is resting for it's big debut of the day (maybe). . . . . .my puppy is doing hot laps up and down the hallway while my husband tries to get a few extra winks of sleep today (usually he gets up with her).

This past weekend Mother Nature was in a spectacular mood, bringing us warm temps and sunny skies. Saturday I had the most spectacular ride, even if it was on the gravel trail. I set out on my own, with my iPod cranked to a selection of tunes that kept me smiling. I headed north, and while I think the wind was more at my back. . . . . .it was still as windy as could be. There were people scattered here and there along the trail, some cleaning up the debris from the winter, some walking their dogs, others jogging or riding their bikes. But everyone had a smile. Good weather does that to people. . . . .it puts a little smile in our hearts.

I figured since Bill was off on his own ride and the puppy was tired from her "play date" the night before, I could take a good 2+ hour ride without any "guilt". I headed north about 1:15, almost making it to Eden. I peeked at my heart rate a few times as I knew I was riding a LOT harder than I needed to. . . . . . .but I didn't care. It felt spectacular and so I pushed on.

Getting back took almost the same amount of time. The sun warmed my skin, the wind blew my hair through my helmet, the wheels spun at a nice pace on my bike. My heart rate responded nicely. All in all, 2:33, AHR 163.

Sunday was a different story. Apparently I used up all my mojo on Saturday because the hellish winds were nearly impossible for me to battle on the road bike, even with 2 other peeps as shields. My legs filled up with acid the moment I tried to exert them and raising my heart rate above 166 seemed like an impossible feat. I decided to just take in the sunshine, chalk up my lack of energy to a hard ride the day before, and call it a day after 90 minutes out and about. Hard. . . . .painful. . . . .but STILL enjoyable.

Later in the day we took Thunder for her first walk in the woods. She loved it. I told her she had to get used to the trails because we'd be spending a LOT of time down there raking and hopefully building some new stuff. I think she's in.

We're waiting for her ears to BOTH stand up, and stay standing up. Right now she looks like a special ed. dog. . . . .but she's far from it. Intelligence oozes from this one. She's already catching on to many things. I think she's "gifted". Yeah, I know she doesn't "look" it though.

Belated b-day shout out

We celebrated. . . .but I didn't do a shout out.

Happy Belated Birthday Lt Dan.

The pryamid was NOT my idea. . . . .and notice the addition of another pyramid virgin. One by one we lure them in.

Also - a birthday shout out to Tiny! Happy B-day!! Hope it's a good one.
